If time traveling existed…

24 Feb

If it was possible to time travel, I would definitely take advantage of it.  I think it would be an advantage to society to be able to fast forward what was going to happen, but you would have to take caution so the future would not change because of your actions.  When I think of time traveling, I think of the show Charmed.  It is the show about three witches where they are constantly traveling through time trying to help out people who are meant to be helped, but making sure that the future is not ruined.  If it were possible to go back in time, I think I would do that too.  It could be a life lesson, or just seeing what it was like when you were younger.  There are many times when you can’t remember what happened when you were little, and I think that would be interesting to go back and experience.

I know how you feel about setting yourself up for disappointment.  I feel like it is better to get a gift that means more than is worth more.  But then again, if it is a holiday and a one year celebration I can understand that you would want both! I think that no matter what it is it is the thought that counts and whether or not it was thought out, a baked cake would have been better!

That is so exciting that you got a kitten!  That is definitely a great Valentine’s Day gift.  I also agree with you when confronting people about a gift that you are not happy with.  There is no easy way to tell someone that you are not happy with their gift, but if it will make your relationship worse by keeping it from them maybe you could hint at them about how you expect more next year. I am glad you had a good Valentine’s Day!!

Valentine’s Day

14 Feb

Valentine’s Day is a very important day to some, and a dreadful day to others.  In my opinion I don’t see the point to make it a dreadful day.  It doesn’t have to be about a significant other, it can just be a day to give gifts to your friends, or receive packages in the mail from your parents! :) I cannot really think of a terrible gift I have gotten on Valentine’s Day.  I think this is a holiday where many people put thought into the things they give, and those mean the most. Things like cheesy Valentine’s Day cards with candy are the best!  If I worked for a greeting card company, I think that the best way to make your cards stand out would either to make them very sentimental, or make them very funny!

Yeah I totally agree with all of yours!! I don’t understand why people lie, because the truth normally comes out one way or another.  Just like Kathleen said, talking behind someone’s back goes hand in hand with lying.  I understand that not everyone needs to know everything, but if you are bad mouthing someone, you should say what your problem is with them, or don’t say it at all.  Your last pet peeve is probably almost every college students! Most of us do not work, and if we do we don’t make a lot of money.  If I ever want to borrow something I at least always ask.  It’s not that I have a problem with sharing things I just would like to know when people are using my things.  Believe me, living in a sorority house for a year has definitely opened my eyes to always asking when you want to borrow something!

I think everyone would have to agree with you on all of these.  Like you said, I was raised to always respect people and their things.  Using simple words such as “thank you,” “please,” or “excuse me” are things that I say multiple times a day.  Whether someone does not acknowledge the fact that you do that, everyone always should.  I liked that you chose three things that all deal with the same issue of respect but in different ways.  All of those things are definitely my pet peeves if they happen repeatedly which in most of your cases it seems like you agree!

Pet Peeves

8 Feb

I feel like there are a lot of things in the world that could be pet peeves.  But what makes something a pet peeve?  Is it something that you notice once?  Or is it something that you constantly notice about one person or another and it drives you crazy?  I’ve never really sat down and made a list about the pet peeves that I have, nor do I ever intend to.  I feel like the more times you make something noticeable, the more and more times it will drive you insane. The first things that comes to mind are noises, but there aren’t a lot of particular noises that I could list.  It becomes more of a pet peeve when noises become distractions.  For example, as I am writing this blog post, I am sitting on the third floor of the library to the left side which is suppose to be the “quiet side.”  But everyone knows that you don’t come to the library alone…so I should expect nothing less right?  Not exactly…So I guess my number one pet peeve is when people are suppose to be quiet, and they aren’t.  Another pet peeve I have is the sound of “nails on a chalkboard.”  The sound makes me cringe just thinking about it.  This is wrong to state, but I guess my next one is people who do not know how to eat correctly.  I live in a sorority house full of 16 girls (crazy huh?) and the slurping, and the opening your mouth when you chew make me nauseous.  Wasting time could be next on my list.  I like to be around groups of people, and I enjoy being in class when I am learning something.  But one of the things I hate the most is when you are suppose to be somewhere at a certain time, and other people are not there when they say they will, or you are sitting there realizing you could be doing a million different things that are actually “worth your while.”  The next one on my list is people who do not try.  I use to cheer on a competitive team, and like everyone says, “There is no I in team.”  It’s hard to get anything done with more than one person with people who do not put forth the same effort that you do. Now given this assignment I could go on for days about things that bother me on any given day.

I am like you in a lot of ways.  The movies are what catches my attention first unless I have heard about the book from a friend.  But I agree with you, most of the time the book is better than the movie.  The only thing that is better with the movie is that you can sit there and watch it with your friends and discuss it!

http://theprinceway.wordpress.com/2012/

I agree with you! The movie does tend to leave out important scenes or information about the characters.  I didn’t read the Twilight books, but I have loved the movies!! That is next to do on my to-do list after getting done with all this school work!

Book vs. Movie

3 Feb

I normally watch the movie rather than read the book.  I like to read short articles or novels because I normally loose interest in long books unless they are very detailed.  The reason I prefer to watch the movie is because it actually shows you what the people and scenes look like.  Sometimes books are misleading because you take what the author is saying and put it into your own thoughts.  In my opinion, it is just more fun to watch the movie!  You can sit there with friends and discuss it, but reading a book is more individual and you normally cannot talk about it until you both are done reading it.  I have read a couple of the Harry Potter books, and I have watched ALL of the movies.  I am a huge fan of Harry Potter, and think they are very fun movies to watch.  The movies go along with books, but the books just have more descriptions, and a couple more scenes.  The movies get darker and darker and this is something you can actually see.  The books are all imagination.  In the end, I think that reading the book then watching the movies are very beneficial, but I like to watch the movie the best because you end up getting the full effect.

I saw that you comment on my bucket list about how ours were alike, so I figured I needed to come check it out myself and you were right! I have traveled to many places around the United States, and have loved going to see different landmarks and what makes every city unique. But one thing I did not think about was going to visit places I have not been to in the US. Of course traveling anywhere in Europe would blow my mind. I have seen pictures and heard people talk about their adventures there but I agree, that is a “must” do before I die. Like you said, starting a family is one of the biggest accomplishments you could make in your lifetime, and I definitely agree with that!

http://hillmill1.wordpress.com/

I think your bucket list has a lot of the same meaning to it as mine does! You seem like you like to do anything that is fun, and you do many things for the accomplishment of actually doing them. I think traveling is one of the top things on my list to do before settling down and having a family or getting married. I liked that you added how important your family is to you at the end of your list, and I agree with that as well. It is the number one thing in my life, and I hope to one day have a family of my own!

Bucket List

20 Jan

I have never been one of those people to actually have a bucket list written down.  However, there are many things I would like to do throughout my life at some point.  One of my favorite things to do is travel, and I want to travel to Europe and Australia.  Skydiving is another thing I am very interested in.  I am scared of heights, but I feel like it would be worth the fear to get to experience skydiving.  Another thing I want to do is go to Germany and visit all the Holocaust museums.  This has always been something that has interested me.  I have visited Washington D.C. and been to some of the museums when I was younger but I was not old enough to get to visit all of them.  I want to eventually get married and have kids. I am not sure how many kids I want, but I would be happy with however many I had.  I want both of my parents to be alive for my wedding, and my dad to walk me down the isle.  All of my family is from Pittsburgh, Pennslyvania meaning we are all HUGE Steeler fans, and I would want nothing more than to go to a Steelers game. Another thing I think would be fun would be to go to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade! I think that it is something that is heavily watched across America, and would be a very cool experience.

Public Relations Comments

Movies for public relations students

This post is rather interesting to me, because I have seen several of these movies but have never thought of them portraying to Public Relations. Before this class, I had never seen “Thank You for Smoking,” and in my opinion it was a great movie to display to our class. It showed how important the PR individual is to an entire company, and how the way they present themselves is what can make or break a company. In contrast, when I saw “Sex and the City” movie, it was easy to see and understand what Samantha’s job is although it was a lot different than what Nick Naylor’s job was in “Thank You for Smoking.” Another movie that could be beneficial to showing a PR class is “She’s Out Of My League.”

Is public relations the issue?

I agree with the PRSAY’s blog post. In any situation it is the Public Relations department’s job to handle the story of any big event, and bring reasoning to what has just happened or what the future move is. I believe that the job of PR is to make sure that the truth comes to light and that they handle the situation as professional as possible. In the Penn State case, there is only so much that the department of PR can do when the issue serves moral and ethical problems. Any individual that was told to cover this case would have a hard time making this issue seem “graceful.” But in my opinion, it is too hard for an individual to cover a story for multiple offenses over a 15 year period when it involves an entire university and their athletics program. I agree with many of the posts above that no matter how good an individual or PR department is there is no way a press release could fix a tragedy like this.

My public relations wish list

I agree with many of the other wish lists, and yours. I wish that the media would display public relations better on television as well. Criminal Minds is one of my favorite shows, and although it doesn’t dipict exactly what Public Relations is, it does a better job than most television series. Another thing I wish is that we had more opportunities like we have in this class to get to talk to people who are actually in the field right now. It has been very beneficial to see how the individuals like their job and what they wish they would have changed if they had the chance. The last thing I wish is that there were more workshops and informational meetings we could go to that would help us decide exactly what we want to do when we graduate.

What have you enjoyed, or not about your blogging experience this semester? Do you anticipate regularly updating your blog for non-class purposes after this semester? Why or why not?

I agree with you, one of the most vital things I learned this semester was how to set up a blog, and how to blog. I have never looked at a blog, or used one before and this class has taught me so much about how social networking works on the internet. This blog was an easy way to get me started into the public relations field by looking at other people’s blogs in the network. I have learned how to keep up with blogs, how to comment on them, and how to find out specific information about people’s opinions all over the web.

Why taking an introductory level public relations class can benefit everybody!

I believe that it can be very helpful for everyone to be required to take an introductory level public relations course. All of the things I have learned this semester are very basic information that would be helpful for every and any job. I agree with you about the blog information. For many people, it is hard for people to start setting up things on the internet, and this class helped me step-by-step set up my blog. It also helped me learn how to comment and look around on people’s blogs which can help in any field. As I have looked around at blogs this semester, you can find what many people think about different things that are happening in the world, and that can be beneficial to all jobs.

Ben and Jerry’s Schweddy Balls ice cream conflict

I have not heard about this Ben and Jerry’s flavor, but I found this post to be very interesting! I think it is very good that the company stood behind their product, because I sure when they made the decision to make this flavor there was going to be people who did not support it. It makes a company look very strong to be able to stand behind their products and to handle their problems maturely.

PR Myths and Preconceptions

I agree with all of the myths and preconceptions you listed in this comment. Although this field is mainly women, there are a men who hold a high position in this field. But the main myth that gets me everytime is that public relations is easy, and anyone can do it. Although it is not a biology or nursing major, it does have a lot to do with many other majors this campus consumes of. We deal with the marketing aspect of companies, we deal with the history of companies, and we also understand the communication in which different companies hold. There are many different aspects to public relations that many people do not understand, and I would not say that it is a field that anyone or everyone can do!

#TwitterisAmazing

Twitter was a site that I also was hesitant about. I had started off with a Myspace in middle school and soon changed over to Facebook, and have continued to have one since highschool. When I heard about Twitter, I was not sure if I wanted to change over from Facebook, and was not sure what all Twitter was. But after getting one last year, it has surely grown on me. I think it was a very brillant site to keep up with what is going on in other people or companies lives! I follow the people that I am curious about their lives, and also companies that I am interested in. I also follow news, sports and other twitters that I feel would be beneficial to read. On the other hand, I think that Twitter has evolved and will continue to change the social media aspect of many jobs. It is a good way to help get little information out at a timeI commented on Jasmine’s blog: http://gaawgeous89.wordpress.com/2011/11/04/twitterisamazing/#comment-35

 Music and Public Relations

I found this post to be very interesting because you related pr and music. Public relations does a lot with the music industry, and like you said, it can make or break a record deal. Many musicians like to sing about what they want or what they think they want their fans to hear, but sometimes it can come off wrong. The pr practioner will then fix it before it hits the media, if not, there job is to fix it once it has come out and try to make light of what has happened.
